If you have been to Rumney recently, you may have run across some weird-looking pieces of metal at the anchors of your route. These “pigtail” anchors (also called “rams horns”) present an ingenious solution to lower-outs at anchors. While you should still use your own draws for top roping, the last person to climb will drop the rope into the “pig tail” and lower off. No threading and no gates that stick. Pretty cool, huh?

The RCA plans to circulate the pigtails to local gyms and perhaps include one in the parking lot so climbers can practice on the ground.
